Door Sweeps & Weatherstripping

Seal door gaps with removable, renter-friendly solutions

Why Door Sealing Matters

The gap under your door can let in as much cold air as a window left partially open. Door sweeps and weatherstripping create an airtight seal that blocks drafts, reduces noise, and can save you hundreds on heating costs.

Renter-Friendly: All solutions in this guide are completely removable and leave no permanent damage to doors or frames.

Types of Door Seals for Renters

Adhesive Door Sweeps

Stick-on sweeps attach to the bottom of your door with strong adhesive tape. Easy to install, no tools required. Remove cleanly when you move out.

Best for: Entry doors, bedroom doors

Under-Door Draft Stoppers

Weighted fabric tubes that sit on the floor against the door bottom. No installation required - just position and use. Can be moved between doors as needed.

Best for: Temporary solutions, apartment corridor doors

Weatherstripping Tape

Self-adhesive foam or rubber strips for door frames. Compresses when door closes to create seal. Available in various thicknesses for different gap sizes.

Best for: Door frame perimeter sealing

Door Threshold Seals

Low-profile seals that sit on the threshold. Some versions use adhesive, others rest in place with friction. Ideal for doors with uneven bottom gaps.

Best for: Doors with large or irregular gaps

Installation Guide

Installing an Adhesive Door Sweep

  1. Measure your door width: Cut the sweep to match exactly.
  2. Clean the door bottom: Remove dust and dirt for better adhesion.
  3. Position the sweep: The bottom edge should touch the threshold when door is closed.
  4. Remove backing and press firmly: Apply even pressure for 30 seconds.
  5. Test the door: Open and close several times to ensure proper clearance.

Applying Weatherstripping to Door Frames

  1. Clean the door frame: Wipe with rubbing alcohol to remove oils.
  2. Measure and cut strips: Cut to length for each side of frame.
  3. Apply starting at the top: Press firmly along the entire length.
  4. Check compression: Close door and feel for seal all around.
Important Considerations:
  • Don't seal emergency exit doors too tightly - you need to open them quickly
  • Maintain clearance for rugs or carpet - sweep should clear without catching
  • Test adhesive on small area first if you have delicate door finishes
  • Remove sweeps if they interfere with door latching or locking
