Weatherproofing Balcony & Patio Doors

Special techniques for sealing sliding doors in rental apartments

Sliding patio door in winter

The Sliding Door Challenge

Sliding patio and balcony doors are notoriously drafty. Their large surface area, multiple gaps, and wear from frequent use make them major sources of heat loss in apartments and condos.

Common Draft Points

Track and Bottom Seal

The sliding panel track creates a gap at the bottom. Use foam weatherstripping or door sweep designed for sliding doors.

Side Jambs

Vertical gaps where sliding panel meets frame. Self-adhesive weatherstripping works well here.

Glass Perimeter

Large glass surface loses heat. Apply window film or use thermal curtains for insulation.

Lock Area

Gaps around latch mechanism. Ensure door is locked tightly and check weatherstripping in this area.

Renter-Safe Solutions

Window Film Application

Apply insulation film to glass panels as you would on regular windows. Large surface may require two people for smooth application.

Heavy Curtains or Drapes

Floor-to-ceiling thermal curtains are highly effective. Use tension rods or existing mounted hardware.

Track Weatherstripping

Special adhesive foam for sliding door tracks. Creates seal when door slides closed.
