Why Window Insulation Film?

Window insulation film creates an insulating air pocket between the plastic film and your window glass. This simple barrier can reduce heat loss by 25-40%, lower energy bills, and eliminate drafts around windows.

Benefits for Renters

  • 100% removable in spring
  • No damage to window frames
  • Works on any window size
  • Reduces condensation
  • Low cost (under $20 per window)

What You'll Need

  • Window insulation film kit
  • Double-sided tape (usually included)
  • Scissors or utility knife
  • Hair dryer
  • Measuring tape
  • Clean cloth

Step 1: Measure Your Windows

Accurate measurements ensure you have enough film and minimize waste.

Measurement Tips

  1. Measure the window frame trim: You'll apply tape to the frame, not the glass, so measure the outer edge of the trim.
  2. Add 2-3 inches to each dimension: Extra film allows for easier application and trimming.
  3. Measure height and width: Record both dimensions for each window.
  4. Count your windows: Don't forget closet windows, kitchen windows, and bathroom windows.

Step 2: Installation Process

1. Clean the Window Frame

Wipe down the window frame trim with a clean, dry cloth. Remove any dust, dirt, or moisture. The tape won't stick well to dirty or damp surfaces.

2. Apply Double-Sided Tape

Apply tape around the entire perimeter of the window frame trim. Press firmly to ensure good adhesion. Don't remove the backing yet.

3. Cut the Film to Size

Using your measurements, cut the film 2-3 inches larger than the window frame on all sides. It's better to have too much than too little.

4. Remove Tape Backing and Apply Film

Starting at the top, remove the tape backing and press the film onto the tape. Work your way around the perimeter. Don't worry about wrinkles yet - the film should be loose and baggy.

5. Shrink the Film with Heat

Using a hair dryer on medium-high heat, hold it 6-8 inches from the film. Move the dryer slowly across the surface. The film will shrink and become crystal clear, removing all wrinkles.

6. Trim Excess Film

Once shrunk, carefully trim any excess film along the edges with scissors or a utility knife. Leave a small border for a clean finish.

Safety Warnings:
  • Never use heat gun or high heat setting - can damage film or window
  • Keep hair dryer moving to avoid hot spots
  • Do not apply film to windows you need to open for emergency egress
  • Test tape on a small area first if you have delicate paint or finishes

Types of Window Insulation Film

Shrink Film (Most Common)

Clear plastic that shrinks with heat to create tight, wrinkle-free seal. Best for most rental windows. Typical lifespan: 1 season.

Heavy-Duty Film

Thicker material for very cold climates or large windows. More expensive but provides better insulation. May last multiple seasons if carefully removed.

Low-E Film

Metallic coating reflects heat back into room. More effective but slightly tinted. Good for windows you don't look through often.

Spring Removal

When warm weather returns, removal is simple and damage-free:

  1. Peel away the film: Simply grab a corner and pull. The film and tape should come off together.
  2. Remove any tape residue: Use rubbing alcohol or adhesive remover on a cloth to clean any remaining sticky residue.
  3. Clean the frame: Wipe down the window frame with a damp cloth to restore it to original condition.
Pro Tip: Remove film on a warm day. The tape adhesive is easier to remove when it's not cold and brittle.
